Download & Usage Instructions

Thank you for downloading and using Design Direct Learning resources

If you have purchased one of resource packages, the file you will have downloaded contains a series of Adobe Reader PDF (Portable Document Format) files which have been 'zipped' together into a single file for an easy, safe download. If you are unfamiliar with the unzipping process, please read the section below entitled Unzipping files. There also follows information on using Adobe Reader PDF files and how to create a Design Direct folder for all your resources.

If you have downloaded just a single volume it may have been provided as a single Adobe Reader PDF file which is not 'zipped'. You can view this file straight away and nothing more needs to be done.

User Licence Reminder

We kindly remind you of the terms of use. Any files from Design Direct Learning are copyright and are licensed for use in one single school, organisation or establishment.

The resources may freely be used on internal networks within that single establishment and must not be shared with other schools, persons or organisations.

If purchased by an individual they may only be used within the organisation the individual is working in and must be deleted when they cease to do so.

In general you must purchase a site licence for each single institution that will use the resources. You may not copy, lend or reproduce these materials for others except within that licensed establishment. All image copyrights and intellectual property remain under the ownership of Design Direct, as indicated in the Acknowledgements page of each volume. You may not re-sell or re-package any materials or website content. If you have any queries at all please contact us to discuss.

Retaining your purchase order and invoice number as proof of licence will enable you to download or request any free updates published. The emails you receive after purchase contain this information as well as download details. Records of your downloads and updates will be kept securely on the website and you will be able to access these details after log-in or via email request.

As the licence for the products purchased within your school or college is perpetual, it might be wise to print the details out and file them safely for other staff within your school in years to come.

For the fine detail and any queries you should review the Full Legal Terms & Conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can the files be used?
There are a number of different ways. You may wish to print them out and use them for display purposes. Projecting them on a whiteboard is another possibility, or making them directly available to students on stand-alone PCs, or via the school network.

Can I make copies of the free and purchased pdf files to give to other members of staff and to students? / Can I put the pdf files on the school or college network for all staff and students to access?
The simple answer is Yes! However, you may not pass copies of the pdf files on to members of staff or students from another educational institution, or to the general public. If you put the files on the network they must be accessible only by members of staff or by students.

If you have purchased the titles yourself, and have not been reimbursed for them, then you may still make them available to staff and students in your current institution. However, if you then cease working for that institution the files should be deleted from all their PCs and the network. If this has been done you may use them in the next institution you work for. If not you (or your new institution) will need to repurchase the files.

Can I email or transfer the free and purchased files to other individuals or educational institutions?
Feel free to use the ‘Tell a Friend’ link to alert a colleague and pass on a direct link to the site, but please do not break the terms and conditions of the licence by passing pdf files on to them directly.

Can I inspect the paid for topic files on a return basis?
We have made available free Contents Showcase files to enable you to preview and assess all that is available for each of our resources. This will give a very good overview of the contents of each purchasable file. Once a resource is purchased and downloaded, a refund cannot be made unless it is digitally faulty in some way.

I’ve downloaded a file, and it won’t open on my computer/won’t print out.
You are strongly advised to download one or more of the free pdfs first to try out on your PC/network system. If these do not work, consult your network manager for advice on viewing and printing Acrobat files - you may need to upgrade to a new (free) Acrobat viewer. If the free files work, then the rest will. The files have been tested and will open without problems on most PCs and networks, but we cannot guarantee they will work on all.

If a page does not appear to print out correctly you may have to adjust your print settings. In particular make sure ‘Fit to Page’ is selected in the Acrobat Reader Print Dialogue box. Please note that most printers will leave a small white border around each page.

Although unlikely, it is possible that a file becomes corrupted during the download process. If you suspect this to be the case, please contact us by email and we will arrange for you to be sent a replacement download of the same file.

I’ve downloaded a file and it has automatically opened on my computer desktop. Do I need to print it out immediately?
No. The file will usually have been saved to your downloads folder - ask your technical support team if you do not know where this is located on your system. It is suggested that you create a special Design Direct folder somewhere convenient to copy all the files into.

Are Design Direct's resources inclusive of VAT?
At present, VAT is not chargeable on our resources. However, it is possible that at some point in the future VAT may become chargeable. When we are required to start adding VAT it will clearly be indicated in our prices and on all invoices.

Using on a School or College Network

Your Unique Licence/Order number
The licence number on your order form is unique and forms part of the agreement to use the resources in one school of college environment. If these resources were purchased by a school of college, or you personally purchased these resources on behalf of your school or college and have uploaded them to the computer network, it is suggested that you ensure a copy of the Licence/Order Number and user agreement are supplied to your Network Manager. This will ensure that future users and or purchasers can refer back to past orders and be aware of what is available under the life-long licence agreement.

For personal purchasers that have uploaded to a computer/network, you are reminded that you must not leave the resources on that system if you subsequently load them onto a different school or college network. Additional licence purchases can be made in the event of two or more establishments requiring use of our resources.

Terms & Conditions

We are very fair with our usage rights which are fairly obvious and standard. However we need to protect our rights and below is a link to the full legal terms and conditions that you should consult for the fine detail.

In general you must purchase a site licence for each single educational establishment that will use the resources. You may not copy, lend or reproduce these materials for others except within that licenced institution. All image copyrights and intellectual property remain under the ownership of Design Direct or their originators, as explained on the acknowledgements page at the end of each volume. You may not re-sell or re-package any materials or website content. If you have any queries at all please contact us to discuss.
