Any Questions?

  • What were the new approaches to design adopted by the Bauhaus?
  • Who designed the first tubular steel chair?
  • As well as furniture, what other area of design did Marcel Breuer excel in?

This unit covers the design of the Bauhaus building in Dessau and examines the range of designers who worked there and created the basic shapes and forms and methods of construction that can still be seen in many of today's everyday products. There is a focus on the furniture and architectural work of Marcel Breuer and the development of the tubular steel chair by the Bauhaus and other European designers.

  • Volume 1 reveals the external and internal design of the 1926 Bauhaus building in Dessau, and explores the breadth of design disciplines it covered in its curriculum. It goes on to consider the impact of the Bauhaus on many of today's everyday buildings and products.
  • Volume 2 covers Breuer's innovative Wassily chair, traces the subsequent development of the first cantilevered chairs by the Bauhaus and other European designers. It concludes by presenting Breuer's later equally successful architectural practice.
